Melissa joined Blackburn Law in October 2015, having worked at a larger firm since her call to the bar in 2009. Her practice is broad, with her focus on civil litigation, in all its many forms. She represents clients in everything from business disputes, construction litigation, and contract preparation, to personal injury, medical malpractice and employment law. She also assists Nelson in his role as Small Business Advocate for energy issues before the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

Melissa’s passion for her job stems from her love of helping people, and she says the best part of her day is when she makes a difference in her client’s life. She recognizes that having a legal issue can be stressful and often reminds her clients to let her take on their stress from the litigation. Her goal is to ensure that her clients understand each step in the process and are supported to achieve success.

Melissa enjoys working at Blackburn Law, where everyone is caring and collaborative, saying that their “open door policy” makes all the difference for her clients. The broad practice areas of the team mean that the answers are often just a few steps down the hall and everyone at Blackburn Law puts the firm’s client’s success at the forefront of everything they do.

When not championing her client’s causes, Melissa volunteers, most often with the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, where she is the current National President and Local Council member. She has also volunteered as a Civil Procedure Workshop leader with the Schulich School of Law and with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society as a Learning Group Facilitator for the articling students’ Skills Course.

When she has free time, Melissa enjoys travelling with her husband, playing with her cat, quilting and baking.
